Members: Fiona Tan, Michelle Ng, Shimon Seng
Project Title: Biofouling

A. Brief Description of Project
- Understood the term 'biofouling'
- Introduction to the drawbacks of biofouling
- Investigated why biofouling occurs on certain surfaces but not crab shells
- Our mentors are interested in the structure of crab shells because they are thinking of replicating the structure into a permanent antifouling coating for the hulls of ships

B. Results
- Because this is a relatively new area of research, and we had nearly nothing on the Internet to begin with, we do not know if ultimately the surface structure of a crab shell can be replicated successfully
- We do know, however, that there are synthetic shark skin and synthetic pilot whale skin available in the market to act as antifouling coatings for ships. But these are not permanent coatings and a new layer of coating will have to be applied every five years or so

C. Reflection

Three content knowledge/skills that we have learnt

1. Operation of the Atomic Force Microscopy and its ability to show the profile of a surface
2. Operation of the Scanning Electron Microscope and its ability to detect anomalies on a surface
3. Operation of the Confocal Image Profiler

Two interesting aspects about our learning

1. The chance to learn to operate these expensive and complex machines
2. Being part of this research

One take-away for life

1. Teamwork is important
