| Project Title: | UNIFEM: Human Trafficking |
A. Brief Description of ProjectHuman Trafficking was the focus of this project we were to investigate.
First, we researched into this issue to have a better grasp of this trend and to also understand why it exists. For our research materials, we initially used the library from the UNIFEM headquarters as an introduction to the topic, followed by a visit to the national library to find additional materials as well as using the internet to look up websites dedicated to the abolition or at the very least the mitigation of human trafficking. It was important to find out what aid and helplines are avaliable to victims.
Next, we compiled a research report that investigated human trafficking in the Singaporean context and offered possible solutions to mitigate this problem.
We also paid a visit to H.O.M.E, one of the shelters in Singapore for trafficking victims. We got the opportunity to meet these women in person and interview them. Through their heart-wrenching stories, we were able to gain a little insight into their lives and experiences. In the end, we went away with a new resolution to help these unfortunate victims through carrying out a food donation drive in school.
Lastly, we organized a food donation drive to benefit human trafficking victims. It was a way for us to have a personal stake in the issue. Furthermore, we conducted a survey after the food donation drive to observe if we had fulfilled the other objective of the donation drive besides simply collecting food - that is, to raise awareness of the issue of human trafficking in students. The results were positive and we were genuinely touched by the willingness of the students to learn more about trafficking and how they can help its victims.
In addition, we had to submit daily reports to our teacher-in-charge and weekly reports to the corresponding person in-charge at UNIFEM to keep track of our progress.
B. Results- A research report
This includes newspaper articles, literature reviews of research material, the common causes and effects of trafficking, the Singapore legislation pertaining to trafficking, case studies, and even the survey results and analysis of the food collection drive.

C. Reflection
Three content knowledge/skills that we have learnt
1. How to put together and formulate a comprehensive research report
2. How to write a literature review
3. How to organise a food donation drive campaign
Two interesting aspects about our learning
1. We mostly did NGO work so it was very different from admin work; instead it was closer to that of project tasks. Our teacher-in-charge instructed us to take down minutes of each and every of our meetings, something which was new to us despite two years of project work in Temasek Academy.
2. Met the victims and even talked to them; it was heart wrenching to hear their life stories.
One take-away for life
1. Regardless of their circumstances, human beings still deserve to be treated with respect and their rights should be always be observed.
