Project Title: Domestic violence

A. Brief Description of Project

We were attached to UNIFEM for five weeks to do research on domestic violence. After five weeks’ research and discussion, we used the information to devise a campaign to raise public awareness of domestic violence. Through the distribution of the brochures we designed to people and the pasting of posters in public places such as public toilets and notice boxes outside medical centers (with permission), we tried to raise the awareness of domestic violence in the people living in the areas around our school. Through the summarized information in brochures and the poster messages, people could learn how serious domestic violence is in society and what they could do to prevent the occurrence of domestic violence around us.

B. Results

As mentioned in the introduction, at the end of the five week attachment, we ran a small-scale campaign to raise public awareness of domestic violence. The group of people targetted are those living in Bedok South, near our school.

We designed a brochure which compiled information on domestic violence, including the types of domestic violence, the symptoms of domestic violence and even ways to prevent the occurrence of domestic violence around us. We distributed the brochures in HDB flats in Bedok South to raise people’s awareness on domestic violence. We even put them in medical centers and other public places (with permission).

What’s more, we designed a poster with a beautiful picture of a happy family and the message we wanted to deliver. We put these posters in public toilets, on notice boards outside medical centers and so on for people to easily see our message. In this way, we hope that those who saw our brochures and posters had better awareness of the issue of domestic violence.

As part of the campaign, we also designed a blog with the address, http://dvexhibition.blogspot.com/ .We included many interesting and useful articles and pictures into the blog for people who are keen to read through and gain some knowledge about domestic violence as well.

C. Reflection

Three content knowledge/skills that we have learnt

- We have gained knowledge about domestic violence through this research project.
- We learnt many useful research skills
- We learnt how to organise and run a campaign to raise public awareness

Two interesting aspects about our learning

- Read many interesting articles from books, magazines and newspapers to obtain information, rather than only find information from the Internet
- Have a chance to interact with people working in UNIFEM, knowing what they usually do everyday and learning many research skills from them

One take-away for life

- knowing that we can take action for a cause we believe in and thereby contribute; in this case, we raised public awareness of domestic violence through our campaign and distributed the brochures and booklets designed and made by us. Although it is a small-scale campaign, it at least got some people to know more about domestic violence.

Project Title: Maid Abuse

Brief description of the project

In this attachment, our group worked on the issue of violence against maids. We studied the reasons behind maid abuse, the different types of maid abuse, the effects of the abuse on maid and the laws that have been put in place against the abusing of maids. The effectiveness of the legal system in protecting potential victims was also discussed. Our group researched into different case studies and statistics and explored the different laws imposed in Singapore. However, our research was not just based on local case studies but also on international ones as well. Nevertheless, the main focus of this project was mainly on Singapore and references from foreign countries were included to give the audience a better perspective of the situation of maid violence happening world wide. This project was spread over a period of four weeks. In the first week, we read up on issues related to our topic and planed how to carry out this project. In the 2nd and 3rd weeks, we started to interview and survey to collect evidence and statistics for our project. The last week was used for tabulating results and collating all the information gathered. The end products of this research were an exhibition in TJC, an orientation proposal to build trust between the employer and the maid and a short video clip to create in Singaporeans an awareness of violence against maids and to share the knowledge we acquired during this research.

Results:

We have become more aware of violent treatment of maids in Singpore; we also acquired a better understanding of the social environment in Singapore. The end product of this research was an exhibition in TJC, an orientation proposal to build trust between the employer and the maid and a short video clip to create awareness among Singaporeans on maid violence and to share the knowledge we acquired during this research.

Reflections:

We learnt that typical maid abuse in Singapore includes physical, sexual, and verbal abuse, forced confinement, accidental deaths, unpaid or delayed wages, denying the maid the rest day, long working hours, illegal deployment, low and unequal wages, inadequate living accomodations, work permit restrictions and religious practice restrictions.

And yet, the legal system in Singapore cannot adequately provide support and compensation for the maid because the legal system focuses on punishing Singaporean citizens at fault and ingores compensation for the domestic workers.

We also learned basic research skills, how to write a proposal, how to put together a project and make a timeline to meet the deadline.

Two interesting aspects about our learning

Our research topic was depressing and the results of our research findings were shocking. We felt exposed to the ugliest facts, the most immoral human beings who were also employers and the most helpless victims, the domestic workers. The latter had little support from the government; they are far away from home; they could only depend on the Humanitarian Organization of Migrant Economics, which is far from enough. It was interesting to realise that the world we live in is not as civilized as we think. Moreover, it is only when we are aware of this that we can find ways to improve the situation.

It was also interesting to learn to carry out a piece of social science research. Although we only had four weeks and the research could not be as perfect as we hoped, we had done our best and we enjoyed this learning experience.

One take-away for life

We should be kind to the people around us, even if they are only our maids, the cleaners, etc. They are human beings whom we should respect because they make our life more convenient and keep the environment we live in clean and tidy.
