Project Title: Virus Workshop for the Public

A. Brief Description of Project

We came up with an activity plan for a Virus Workshop for the Public to introduce them to viruses in layman terms and also get them to note how fast a virus can spread. In our case, we chose to focus on the Influenza virus as it has become increasingly common for people to fall ill to the flu, yet still neglect to see how it can drastically affect our lives.

C. Reflection

Three content knowledge/skills that we have learnt

1. We learnt how to carry out PRC tests and electrophoresis, DNA extraction (from other group), which can help in the identification when necessary in the labs.

2. We got a recap on DNA and basic information such as genes that we have learnt but forgotten along the way. Also, due to the number of classes we helped out in, we have learnt a great deal about topics such as Cells, Forensics, DNA and other things covered. From these workshops, we also learnt about patience and the understanding a teacher needs to take care of his/her students while getting them to listen, as well as how to interact with younger students.

3. Finally, we learnt many skills from our presentation. Some include:
  • to speak with more charisma (like Ms. Petrina) so as to ensure people's attention is on you (presentation skills).
  • how important it is to listen and be attentive to your group mates while doing a group project, and to ensure that each member pulls her weight to get the job done fast and efficiently.
  • the creativity to come up with hands-on games that will be effective in getting the point across, without being disruptive.

Two interesting aspects about our learning

1. We actually had many opportunities to interact with children, as we were supposed to facilitate primary school science classes.
2. We also learned a few simple magic tricks from the staff as they all had helped out in the magic exhibition before - magic tricks are really just illusions. Presentation is key.

One take-away for life

1. We worked in a completely new environment and that has equipped us with the skills to adapt to new surroundings, as well as to take up challenges readily.
