Project Title: Masks

A. Brief Description of Project

Our final project was in collaboration with the Asian Civilizations Museum (ACM).
The ACM provided us with many different objects from which we were to choose a group of objects to work on. We were to make 3D models and animation clips of them. We, the group consisting of Yingxuan, Elysia and Liu Sha, chose to do models on different types of masks. We chose one Chinese Opera mask and two Indian masks – one of an evil person and one of a princess. Each of us worked on one of the objects - Yingxuan on the Chinese opera mask, Elysia the Indian Princess mask, Liu Sha the e vil Indian mask - and was supposed to create an animation clip showing 360 degrees of it.

B. Results

After many lessons, much practice and much help from our mentor, Mr. Ahmad, we managed to use the skills we learnt to build our mask models and create some animations. Some basic lighting was added to the final product and the background colour was changed. There were animations of a close-up view showing off details on the masks and some animations from a further view to show the overall product.

Each of us submitted:

  1. A rendered .bitmap image of our objects at the resolution of 640x480 pixels.
  2. An animation of the object rotating 360 degrees in either Quicktime Movie (Sorensen 3 Best Quality codec) or Windows AVI Movie (Intel Indeo codec) at the resolution of 640x480 pixels.
  3. The 3ds Max file (.max). 3ds Max was the programme we used for all of our 3D modelling and animation work.
  4. A written report (maximum 1 A4 page) describing the object and any information from the reference item. The different methods used to create the object were also included, as well as the problems we encountered and how we overcame them.
  5. Some of the reference images, e.g, photos, textures, etc

C. Reflection

Three content knowledge/skills that we have learnt

  1. Use photos taken from different angles to help construct the model in 3ds Max. This actually helped us a lot as the photos give us a better 3D perception to work on our models.
  2. Basic skills in 3ds Max we have learnt include primitives, extrusions, edit poly, lighting, textures and UVWs mapping.. For example, UVWs mapping is a very useful method which allows us to "paste" the map (combined by photos taken from different angles) nicely on the surface of the model. It makes the model more realistic.
  3. Animation skills in 3ds Max we have learnt are uses of timeline, out-of-range types, cameras, links, etc.
Two interesting aspects about our learning

  1. Working on the project, we learnt that different masks actually represent different cultures and different ways of expression. For example, we found out that in Indian cultures, the design of a mask reveals the personality of the character.
  2. Throughout this whole attachment, we were allowed to work almost at our own pace with as much help as we needed. The learning environment is very different from our normal everyday school-based study life. The environment for Llearning was much more conducive and we enjoyed it very much.
One take-away for life

One must be patient when doing anything; it helps in completing the work.
