Project Title: Stabilising G-quadruplex

A. Brief Description of Project
Using various spectroscopy techniques such as Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), we tried to find out the structures of a certain section of a DNA sequence, specifically the telemere region of the sequence. The sequences we examined were vital because they were found to be the major cause of cancer production in humans. Finding a way to stabilize them would be essential in creating a cure for cancer.

B. Results
We observed that when we change the conditions of the G-quadruplex structure formed, the electrons will be found in different parts of the structures. We are able to tell this by observing the peaks on the graph we obtained from NMR. We can change the conditions of the G-quadruplex structure by putting the substance in potassium buffer or lithium buffer to alter the salt content of the G-quadruplex. We can also change the forming of the G-quadruplex structure through quenching and annealing (fast heating or slow heating).

C. Reflection

Three content knowledge/skills that we have learnt

1. We learnt how to use the NMR machine.
2. We learnt that the DNA structure can be altered by varying the conditions they are in.
3. We learnt how to make a DNA sequence.

Two interesting aspects about our learning

1. We get to use a variety of expensive and world-class machines
2.

One take-away for life

1. We must have passion in our work to go far.
