Project Title: Part 1: Marketing Singapore as a Must-Visit Tourism Destination in the World

Part 2: Developing Sentosa into a Destination of Choice in 2010


A. Brief Description of Project

Our attachment focuses on the broad topic of hospitality and tourism in Singapore and Sentosa. As Singapore's economy relies quite heavily on the tourism sector, it is indeed very important to constantly review and improve on this sector to maintain and improve tourism numbers. Singapore, in comparison with other major tourism competitors in the region, such as Thailand and Dubai, is at a disadvantage because of its land scarcity and lack of natural attractions. Therefore, we are tasked to come up with marketing and developing ideas on how to market Singapore in face of these limitations.

The project that we are tasked upon is split into two different categories.
Part 1: Marketing Singapore as a Must-Visit Tourism Destination in the World
Part 2: Developing Sentosa into a Destination of Choice in 2010

We presented our ideas in two reports and a presentation. At the end of the attachment, a compiled report from both groups will be submitted to the Singapore Tourism Board.


B. Products
Using the knowledge and insights we gathered throughout the attachment, we produced a 20 page report on both part 1 and 2, with equal weightage on each. The report will be submited to the Singapore Tourism Board for reviewing and considering. We also proposed ideas on developing Sentosa into a destination of choice in 2010 in a form of a presentation; some included introducing new attractions while others served to improve present products and services.

In developing our report, we also came up with a survey for tourists. This gave us an insight in the tourists' impression of Singapore and aided us in coming up with the report.

C. Reflection

Three content knowledge/skills that we have learnt

1. We learnt to analyse the marketing strategies employed by a particular tourist destination (in this case Singapore) and the different types of promotion used.
2. We improved and learnt tips on how to come up with comprehensive reports detailing our findings and recommendations.
3. Using the content knowledge we picked up during our lectures, field trips and research, we learnt how to make practical recommendations on how to improve Singapore's tourism destinations.


Two interesting aspects about our learning

1. The field trip to Sentosa was highly interesting, in particular the tour of Rasa Sentosa Resort, which gave us an insight into the daily running of a hotel.
2. The lecturers we encountered gave us inspiring points of view based on their wide experience in the tourism industry.

One take-away for life

1. The greatest take-away that we got from the experience was working in a different environment from what we usually encounter in TJC.
