RE: Nuclear Physics or Biofuels.

Continuing on I would like to talk about bio fuels Advantages -Reduces green house gases compared to conventional fuels. -First generation biofuels can save up to 60% of carbon emissions compared to fossil fuels. -Second generation biofuels offer carbon emission savings up to 80%. -Another advantage of biofuels is that they save drivers money. -Biofuels are biodegradable and therefore less hazardous and dangerous than normal fuels -By reducing dependence on foreign fuel sources, countries can support themselves and protect themselves from the influence of other countries -Uses simpler technology and lower transportation costs alongside increased labour.
Disadvantages -By adapting more land for bio fuels, it means that there would be the lost of natural habitats for animals and rainforests
-If biofuels becomes more attractive for famers, they would grow crops instead of food thereby lessening food production leading to an inflation.
-Bio fuels can still contribute to green house gases
-Some bio fuels are un-sustainable
-Costly
-Massive amounts of water is required
All in all, we can tell the pros and cons of each energy source, however I feel that Nuclear Physics should be used instead of biofuels. This is as despite the danger and cost, what Earth needs now is protection for global warming and nuclear energy can do this, unlike bio fuels which released green house gases.

Nuclear Energy Advantages o Since the Earth has limited supplies of coal and oil, nuclear power plants help to produce energy regardless of the supply of coal or oil. o Nuclear energy accounts for around 17% of the world’s electricity needs, and helps to improve the economic growth of countries by providing power for new industrial technologies. Also, it is used to help meet the needs of the world’s growing populations and expanding economies. o Nuclear power plants only requires a ton of uranium to produce far more energy compared to the burning of millions of tons of coal or oil. o The burning of coal and oil pollute the air with greenhouse gases and contaminants. Nuclear energy does not, hence it serves to reduce global warming.
Disadvantages • Nuclear explosions produce radiation, that harms the bodies of humans. • Nuclear reactors have waste disposal problems. As they produce nuclear waste products that emit radiation, these could harm the people who touch them. Hence, they have to be carefully handled with and stored in special cooling pools at nuclear reactors. • Nuclear reactors only last for about forty to fifty years.

Continuing from where I left off... Nuclear reactors can only last, the most, fifty years. This means that they must be replaced rather frequently. Nuclear reactors produced nuclear waste products which emit radiation. As people can be killed by just touching the waste, the nuclear waste must be stored in special places. This is creating a huge waste disposal problem. As for bio fuels, they do not emit as much green house gases. Bio fuels are more environmentally friendly. In fact, it is proven that bio fuels can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by a lot. It can help to halt or even reverse the rising levels of green house gases. Even oil contributes to the emission of green house gases. Bio fuels are also renewable sources of energy, meaning that they can be replaced naturally.
Thus , although both nuclear energy and bio fuels have their plus points, but between the two of them, bio fuels are better. Bio fuels are more environmental friendly and there are no risks involving bio fuels. Any other opinions? :D Credits to: http://library.thinkquest.org/3471/nuclear_energy.html http://www.thegreencarwebsite.co.uk/biofuels.asp

You mentioned that "The excess build up of carbon in Antarctica causes there to be a hole in the ozone layer." Where did you get this information from? Can you verify it?

To demonstrate a responsible Australian approach to greenhouse management in the lead up to the Kyoto negotiations, Prime Minister Howard announced a package of measures for greenhouse gas abatement in November 1997. Supported by $180 million of funding, the package of 24 measures covered the general industry, energy, agriculture and forestry and transport sectors, and also saw the establishment of the Australian Greenhouse Office (AGO) as the primary agency for the carriage of government policy on greenhouse. From an energy production standpoint, the most salient measures were: The extra 2% renewable energy measure, whereby electricity retailers are required to source an extra 2% of their electricity from new renewable energy sources by 2010; The introduction of electricity generation efficiency standards; Accelerated energy market reform to improve the economic efficiency of energy supply; Funding support of renewable energy projects through a series of showcase and commercialisation grants; Support for reforestation and carbon sequestration activities.

The Greenhouse Effect is the process where greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, like carbon dioxide, trap heat to keep the surface of the earth at a constant temperature. However, man is causing the change by burning nature's vast stores of coal, oil and natural gas. This releases billions of tonnes of carbon dioxide every year, although the changes may actually have started with the dawn of agriculture, say some scientists. This increase in the Carbon Footprint created by man, which ultimately increases the amount of greenhouse gases trapping heat, more and more heat is being trapped in the atmosphere, thus causing Global Warming. Global warming leads to Climate Change, which is caused when the temperature of the surface of the earth increases and brings about swift, abrupt changes to climate, weather and even natural disasters. Even today, there are more and more natural disasters linked to temperature, like droughts and flood. Water-borne diseases, and diseases spread by water-based vectors like mosquitoes, are on the march. Dengue fever, Japanese encephalitis, yellow fever and other diseases that were once under control are now resurgent. Now an analysis of more than 300 human diseases has found that the distribution of pathogens worldwide is strongly linked to climate, and that climate change could lead to a massive increase in human vector-borne disease. Rise in sea levels would flood huge swathes of the Earth's most densely populated regions, says an unpublished report from the world's top climate scientists. Caused in large part by the melting of Greenland's ice sheet, this process would take a thousand years or more but would be "irreversible" once underway. The world’s governments are reading the report about this issue. The final draft seen by New Scientist suggests that dozens of the countries meeting this week to agree on global warming limits through the Kyoto Protocol may face being wiped off the world map.

Hi Dong Ying, I have no idea why you cannot edit the page. Can you try sending me a soft copy on MS Word of what you need to add it and I'll add it for you. I seem to have no problem editing the page. My email address is tan_seng_kwang@moe.edu.sg

Organisation: Republic Polytechnic Mentor: Mr Tan Kok Cheng Group Members: Jonathan Lee and Fu Cheng Cheng Name of Project: Games Design and Programming (Jumping Turbo) Brief description of the project This project is basically using python programming to create 2D game. Each lesson, the tutors from Republic Polytechnic will teach us the key concepts to create a game. In total, there are 13 different problems to tackle and after we had learnt the basic concepts of programming, we formed our teams to work on our project. The whole idea of this project is to make use of all the key concepts that we had learnt during the course to create a 2D game of our choice. Results Our Project is called Jumping Turbo. This is an action game where player can jump from 1 platform to another with the scoring system in place. The platform will spawn at the bottom at random location and speed. The main objective of this game is to score as many points as possible trying to break the current record. We manage to complete this project with the help of our experienced tutors and from very useful website such as pygame.org Reflection 3 content/knowledge skills you learnt (i) I learnt how to incorporate music and sounds into the game so that it serve as an interesting interface. (ii) I understand that for python programming the indentation and keywords are crucial in determining whether the whole game will be able to run. (iii) With reference to guides on the web, I acquired the knowledge of creating a good game. The key importance is that the game needs to be balanced and at the same time by adding in the reward system, it will make the player feel a sense of satisfaction when playing.

This thread is an invitation to students to give your feedback and suggestions to the Attachment Programme. Too short? Too long? Too hectic? Are there other jobs/institutions that you would like to be attached to?
